Hours after repairing an ancient tapestry at a quaint bed and breakfast, she grows incomprehensibly tired, and wakes up to realize she’s not in her room, with no memory of when or how she left. Historical Thriller

Date Published: May 8, 2018

 Publisher: Diversion Books

“A glittering Renaissance gem of a novel. Donna Russo Morin, a master of her craft, has penned an intricate story full of lush historical detail with a plot that will leave you breathless.” —Tasha Alexander, New York Times bestselling author of Death in St. Petersburg

In her final standalone novel featuring Da Vinci’s Disciples, Donna Russo Morin delivers a thrilling story of the secret female artists of Florence, under the tutelage of Leonardo Da Vinci, and their heroic, potentially deadly efforts to save great works of art from the infamous Bonfire of the Vanities.

“Illicit plots, mysterious paintings, and Leonardo da Vinci all have their part to play in this delicious, heart-pounding work.” —Kate Quinn, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of The Alice Network

Lorenzo de Medici is dead, and his son Piero has brought war and famine upon the city of Florence. Yet, the glory that is Renaissance artistry grows more magnificent, as does the work of the women known as Da Vinci’s Disciples. Now they face their most dangerous challenge, one shrouded in the cloak of a monk.

From the ashes of war, Friar Girolamo Savonarola rises. Some call him a savior and a prophet, a man willing to overthrow tyrannical rulers and corrupt clergy, the Borgia Pope among them. Fra Girolamo is determined to remold Florence from an avaricious, secular culture to a paragon of Christian virtues.

Many call Savonarola a delusional heretic, incapable of anything but self-serving fanaticism. When he sets out to destroy all secular art forms, Da Vinci’s Disciples call him an enemy … but not all of them.

“Like a glorious Italian fresco-richly textured and vividly portrayed … Highly recommended for lovers of history, art, and courageous women.” —Anna Lee Huber, bestselling author of the Lady Darby Mysteries

“Donna Russo Morin renders one of the most tumultuous periods in Florence’s history in bright colors and with vivid descriptions. This tale of a group of determined women standing up for what they believe in … will absolutely resonate with modern readers.” —Alyssa Palombo, author of The Most Beautiful Woman in Florence

Excerpt

“I know what you’re thinking.” Her accent thickens. “I will get away from this life.”

And why don’t I believe her? Why do I feel like I’ll see a picture of her dead body on the front-page news someday?

The mob.

No getting out.

Not alive, at least.

My eyes open at the rustle of material. She’s lifting my blazer from her lap, holding it out to me, and I catch sight of the angel wings on the inside of her wrist as the jacket sleeve slides up a little.

I almost shut my eyes again as a memory—a recognition of some sort—tries to resurface. It’s like a thin veil has dropped over my mind, taunting me with only fragments, a puzzle to figure out.

“We’re here, Mr. King,” my driver says after opening the glass partition.

I had instructed him to park around the block from the location Gia gave me. Hopefully she won’t be noticed. And as far as we could tell, we didn’t have a tail.

But before she leaves, there’s something I still need to know. “How’d you get involved with the mob in the first place?” I finally take my jacket from her, and she reaches for the handle.

“My father,” she says before getting out and closing the door.

And it’s in that moment everything comes to me.

About the Author

Brittney Sahin began writing at an early age, with the dream to be a published author before the age of 18. Although academic pursuits (and, later, a teaching career) interrupted her aspirations, she never stopped writing–never stopped imagining.

It wasn’t until her students encouraged her to follow her dreams that Brittney said goodbye to Upstate New York in order to start a new adventure in the place she was raised: Charlotte, North Carolina. Here, she decided to take her students’ advice and begin to write again.

In 2015, she published her first novel, Silenced Memories (The Safe Bet). When she is not working on upcoming novels, she spends time with her family. She is a proud mother of two boys, and a lover of suspense novels, coffee, and the outdoors.

New Release: 100 Points by Quig Shelby

Save The People have created the perfect egalitarian society from the ruins of global warming, where youth and health are celebrated in Britain’s constant sunshine. And to ensure that no individual takes more than another from the world’s remaining resources, each citizen gets 100 points to spend on education, housing and health; just be careful when they’re gone. Anyone who reaches the age of sixty retires to glorious Scotland ‘where dreams come too’ and gets what they well and truly deserve. But when a shipwreck of drowned old-timers washes up on his beach, the village policeman becomes more than a little interested in his own parents’ retirement and begins an investigation with unforeseen consequences.

Quig Shelby has previously published six other novels to date including:

The Crocodile Masquerade

The Concubine Affair

The Scrying Glass

3 SUM

Monsterotica

The Violent Sunflowers

About the Author:

No one let me into their world so I invented a few of my own. Welcome to my Universe.

I’m a night owl and a hopeless romantic with a curious mind, half of it male and half female; the second half is lesbian.

My advice on life is don’t be afraid of being different, be afraid of being the same as everyone else.

My favourite quote has to be:

‘Normality is a pavement comfortable to walk, but no flowers grow on it.’

(Vincent Van Gogh)

Preface to the Book:

“‘And now for a quick talk on our wonderful 100 points.’

He covered the injustices of the rusting generation that sucked up the nation’s housing like vampire bats to rent as nest eggs. And they all laughed at the stories of road and trolley rage. There was a short monologue from the commissar whilst reading his notes on God’s approval of the 100 points, after which they all scanned through their condensed handbooks on offences that lost careless citizens points.

‘And that’s it, men,’ said the commissar, slamming his book shut.

Once upon a time, he might have said ‘gentlemen’ but like its female counterpart ‘lady’, it had long been banned. The Party hierarchy had struggled to understand any reason for the terms except to elevate one citizen above another through ill-judged flattery and vanity. It was also believed they undermined the use of man and woman which were meant to be celebrated. As the Archbishop of Canterbury had said when weighing into the argument, ‘there was neither a gentleman nor a lady in the Garden of Eden.’”

“100 POINTS” by Quig Shelby is available in paperback and e-book from Amazon UK and from Amazon US.

Chapter 1
x

Apparently, life doesn’t end when you get married. I suppose that’s obvious, but it’s hard to tell from the way Happily Ever After stories dominate our culture. At any rate, marriage seemed like such a solid conclusion to the stories I had to tell that I ended my first four memoirs the day I married Evan Blackwood.
If only I’d known then that all hell was about to break loose.
My name is Cassandra Morgan Ursula Margaret Blackwood, and if you think that’s a mouthful, go ahead and call me Cassie. Most of my friends still do, although I no longer feel unworthy of the full appellation.
To be fair to my younger self, eager to share her journey of self-discovery with the world in the wake of some powerful events, things were quiet for almost two years. More happened to my two best friends than to me during that time. Oh sure, I consulted with the sheriff’s department here and there on cases that mystified them. I also worked with my husband and a dozen others to form and support the White Guard, an organization attempting to unify and protect the magical world. We made some big gains when Matthew was able to convince most of the magical world that his nemesis was using blood magic to control people’s minds – including mine and my husband’s.
It was a sobering moment for us.
But mostly during that time, I grew a baby and took care of her. I always wanted children, maybe because I’m the oldest of nine and having kids around seemed natural.
Anastasia Blackwood turned one in mid-December, right around the time my youngest siblings, Michael and Maya, both turned two. Honestly, I would have preferred to have two separate parties – or even three – to give each child his or her due attention, but my mom wasn’t up to it. She wasn’t up to much anymore, including party planning, so it fell to me and Juliana, seventeen now and pretty much already an adult. The last two years had aged her, as the responsibility for raising Michael and Maya fell heavily upon her shoulders.
The day started normally enough. Juliana, with Michael and Maya in tow, arrived at my place several hours before the party to decorate. My two best friends, Madison and Kaitlin, came to help too, the latter with a one-year-old son of her own. Madison, pregnant but not showing just yet, volunteered to keep the toddlers out of trouble. “For practice,” she said, although we all knew she was doing us a favor. I’d return that favor as soon as she realized how badly moms need breaks sometimes.
Yeah, I know, babies and birthday parties and maybe life really does end when you get married. Or at least loses its sex appeal. Although for the record, I still found Evan as sexy as ever. I mean, the man could drive me to orgasm with a single, magical kiss.
Damn, but it was addictive.

Excerpt

Chapter One

Few experiences are more exciting than your own dreams. Even fewer are more tiresome than listening to someone else’s, but hang with me for a sec. This isn’t what you think.

I wait behind the curtains of a stage next to a bunny who is juggling mice. I’m supposed to go on next, and I have absolutely no idea what I’m going to perform. Whenever I try to think up an idea, the bunny misses her catch and the mouse hits the floor, giving off a dull squeak. You can imagine how distracting this is. Then I realize that I’m practically naked. The only thing between me and total embarrassment is my flimsy underwear.

By now I should have figured out that I’m dreaming – what can be more obvious than the underwear bit? – but I don’t. I’m too nervous about having to go on stage next to worry about what is and isn’t normal. That’s the funny thing about dreams: the ridiculous seems perfectly reasonable until the moment after you wake up.

Then it happens. I’m stressed out about my turn, clueless to the absurdity of bunnies juggling mice or, for that matter, the seagulls crossing swords with the cows or even the chimpanzees twirling in their tutus. My moment comes when the penguin tells me it’s time for me to go on stage. In an absolute panic, I say no.

“No,” I say.

Just to be clear, I mean that I say no – not the dream version of me shaking in my underwear by the stage but me, the guy in bed thinking up this nonsense for whatever reason we all dream. And when I say no, everything changes.

The dream haze lifts and my vision becomes super clear like when I first got glasses. I move my arms and stare at my hands as though I’m an alien inhabiting a new body. And just to be clear, when I say I move my arms, I mean that I do this – not the dream version of me but the actual, well, you get the idea. My point is that I can control myself in the dream, and this is the coolest thing I have ever done. Ever. True, that’s not saying much since I’m only a seventh grader, but it’s still very cool.

I don’t think the penguin agrees. He backs away and calls out for someone named Connor. A kangaroo hops over, looking none too pleased.

“You’re not allowed to do that, mate,” Connor says. Of course he has an Australian accent. He’s a kangaroo!

“Maybe not, but I can. Check it out.” I wave at him.

Connor crosses his arms. OK, how does he not get how awesome this is? I shake my whole body around, ending with wide arms and a big “Ta-da!”

The kangaroo sighs, jumps high in the air, and slams both feet directly into my face.

I wake up with a start and cuss out the kangaroo. I know quite a few cuss words thanks to middle school. My dad’s not so thrilled, but I figure hey, at least I’ve learned something.

I pull the sheet over my head and mutter, “Connor, Connor, Connor!” to remind my brain where I left off. I’ve never been able to slide back into the same dream, but I try anyway. Unfortunately, if I do dream again, I don’t remember it. The next thing I know, my alarm gives off an irritating buzz, and I slap the thing hard.

Groan. Another stressful day of school with all those annoying people. No wonder I only ever dream about animals.

 Jo Michaels is…

Hi, I’m Jo. Let’s forget all the “Jo Michaels is blah, blah, blah” stuff and just go with it. I’m a voracious reader (often reading more than one book at a time), a writer, a book reviewer, a mom, a wife, and one of the EICs at INDIE Books Gone Wild. I have an almost photographic memory and tend to make people cringe at the number of details I can recall about them and/or their book(s). My imagination follows me around like a conjoined twin and causes me to space out pretty often or laugh out loud randomly in completely inappropriate situations.
 x
I have a degree in graphic design, and my journey to the end was one few students who begin that program ever complete. However, this was one case where my memory and OCD tendencies helped me. Graduation was one of the most amazing days of my life. But, my most amazing day was when my now husband proposed. Every little girl dreams of being Cinderella someday, and he pulled off the proposal of fantasies.
 x
At the risk of sounding cliché, I’m going to let it out there and say how much I absolutely adore the man I’m married to. Along with my children, he’s my whole world.
 x
I’ve lived in Louisiana, Tennessee, and Georgia, but I’ve had my feet in almost every state. Traveling is something I adore, and have plans to someday see the Mongolia I’ve written about in Yassa.

One of my favorite things is hearing from fans! You can find me on social media most any day of the week. Connect! I’d love to hear from you.
