New Release: Awakening by Jackie Goldman

Romantic Thriller

Date Published: November 17, 2018

Is it possible that the entirety of one’s life has been steered by the hand of fate towards a single moment? For Brooklyn French program teacher – and single parent of two- Tess Shapiro, it would certainly seem so. After discovering that her life and her marriage were artificial constructs based on lies and deceit, Tess must undergo the ultimate reality check. She delves deep into her subconscious, venting her frustrations by indulging in a lifelong habit of drawing graphic novels starring her glamorous alter ego, an international spy by the name of Andrea Chambers. Meanwhile, in the real world, anti-French terrorism is taking the world by storm. What, and who, is behind the vile attacks against French-speaking people everywhere from Brooklyn to Burundi? As she suspects that her new lover may not be who she thought he was, Tess’s ability to perceive truth through a distorted collage of deception, brings comic book fantasy and real world tragedy crashing together in a whirlwind of romance and political intrigue. When, in a single moment, Tess realizes the totality of the lie she has been fed and believed, and the impossibility of the truth, she makes a staunch decision that will change her life, and how she perceives the world, forever.

Until then though, she contents herself to traveling the worlds she has created within her books. At the moment, Taki can be found either writing about faraway places or reading a book. Excerpt

She stood there for a minute, watching the view as though she wanted to imprint every detail in her memory. He couldn’t see her face but wondered what she was thinking. Did she miss the States? Was she wondering how anyone could live in such a desolate place? Or was she in awe? He hoped the latter. A ray of sunshine broke through the clouds, shooting straight across the mountain—Beinn Tomaidh, as it was called—into the Loch Darroch, from which the town had gotten its name. The light reflected in the water and made it shimmer green and gold. Then, the clouds closed in on themselves again, and the loch grew dark, an unblinking black eye by the foot of the mountain.

“I understand now.”

He blinked, drawn from his thoughts by the sound of Daisy’s voice. She turned around to face him. With her face aglow, her eyes shimmering and her soft colors, he was struck by the sudden notion that there was something in the room whose beauty competed with that of the view.

“This is Scotland. This, right here. Its soul. Does that sound cheesy?”

He cleared his throat. “Not at all.”

“I understand why people would come here. All year-round. We must make sure they know it exists.” She chewed her lip and sent the view another glance. “How bad is it?”

“Pardon me?”

Her brows furrowed with impatience. “I’ve already understood your financial situation is bad. But how bad? How long do you have before you have to close down?”

Darkness. It lowered itself over his senses as quickly as the disappearing ray of light over the loch. Suddenly, it became hard to breathe, and the sudden panic made him take a step back.

“I think we’re done here,” he said. He didn’t quite recognize his own voice. It was as though someone was talking through him—and that person’s voice was both deeper and rougher.

Blindly, his airways tightening, he made his way to the door and headed downstairs, without taking care to see if she followed.

About the Author

Linda Govik is Swedish, born and bred. She grew up in what could be described as a ghetto to Gothenburg, but survived it fairly unscathed (in those days, bomb threats to the school meant a day off, and wasn’t really a big thing), and when she met her husband, they moved further up north to a small coastal town, where she now resides, a stone’s throw from the sea.

Cats, coffee and exercise is what sustains her (but unfortunately so does food, which is why the effects of all this exercise still doesn’t make her look like Tinkerbell… but she’s also (fortunately) old enough not to care), and, needless to say, she also loves writing. And reading, any genre.

New Release: The Hidden Children (The Lost Grimoire #1) by Reshma K. Barshikar

About the Book:
‘What price would you pay to be extraordinary? What would you do to speak to a butterfly?

Shayamukthy cruises through life: shooting hoops, daydreaming and listening to her favourite books. Even moving from the US to India, to a new school, a new culture, hasn’t really rattled her. But something isn’t right anymore and it begins when ‘New Girl’ joins the school.

She pulls Shui into a world of magic and wonderment, a world she has been hidden from all her life. What starts as a quest to look for a lost book, hurtles Shui into a world where people live in trees, talk to the dead and speak to butterflies.

But like all power, magic comes at a steep price, and under all things wondrous lie demons waiting to crawl out. The more Shui learns, the more she doubts everything and everyone around her.

Will she be able to master her powers, or will they devour her and everyone she loves?

Read an Excerpt:

I think I am
ordinary. I lack purpose. Boohoo you think, typical teenager angst. But if I
died tomorrow, it wouldn’t impact anyone’s life except my parents’. My friends,
on the other hand, they have a life. See them there, yes there, to the right,
next to the banyan tree behind the basketball court. You see a slightly pudgy
boy and a beautiful girl? The boy’s name is Jai. The girl’s name is Nallini.
Both have purpose. Jai wants to write comic books. He wants to be like Neil
Gaiman or something, some famous comic-book guy. Nallini wants to be an
actress, the next Deepika Padukone – that, and to win next year’s gold medal in
Jujitsu.

She has absolutely no
problems reconciling the inherent contradictions in both her desires.

I want nothing, need
nothing, except something to need. I can’t see past today even to tomorrow; I
have a hard enough time figuring out what I am now. I am not from a broken
home, unless you count the fact that parts of the building I live in are
falling apart. I am not poor, not like Anuki Chabria who got called out of her
exam because her parents couldn’t pay her fees. I do not have acne bursting on
my face, making me look like a human cheese grater. I am just, well, ordinary.
So could you really blame me? Blame me for wanting to be special? Blame me for
wanting to be fierce? To be like Storm from the X-Men, or like Beyoncé? When I
look back now, at everything that has happened in the last few months, I
realise I’m just as much to blame as her. The big question – well, it’s not a
big question at all, really, because it’s all rubbish now, because you can’t go
back. Even I can’t go back. So the absurd question everyone around me
seems to asking is – would I have acted differently, would I rather NOT be the
person I am now?

No.

And neither would
you. What price wouldn’t you pay to be extraordinary, to ride the wind,
to float with unicorns, to be the one chosen…? Because, you see, I’ve gotten
into some serious trouble and want to explain myself. I didn’t mean for things
to happen. I didn’t mean for someone to die. So I ask you – wouldn’t you have
said yes if someone said – ‘Do you want to learn how to speak to a
butterfly?’

Praise for Two Minus One: A Memoir

“There are times in life when we are presented with unforeseen challenges that feel so overwhelming, we just want to shut down and hide. In those moments we have a choice, to go towards the light or stay in the darkness. Kathryn shows us her deepest sadness, and her heroic struggle to get her life back. Her book shows how she recognized that there is life after grief and suffering,  and to remember that happiness is always a choice, one we DO have control of.” – Jennifer Pate Gilbert, founder of Save the Date® and author of I Never Promised You a Goodie Bag

“… Kathryn Taylor opens her heart and soul to take us on her journey of recovery. With resilience and grace, she reminds us that, no matter what life throws your way, you can reach down and bring up the courage to not only go on, but grow.” – Vikki Stark, Author of Runaway Husbands: The Abandoned Wife’s Guide to Recovery and Renewal

“Taylor offers a poignant and well-crafted account of what it is like to be sixty-years-old, believing you are happily married one day, only to discover the next, having missed all of the clues, that you’ve been abandoned. This is certainly a story that demonstrates the powerful ways in which  – love is blind – . This is a human story, one of vulnerability, insight and resilience…highly recommended.” – Diane Pomerantz, PhD, author of Lost in the Reflecting Pool

“Taylor’s book is a gift to anyone who is divorced and feeling hopeless because she illustrates, through her own story of suffering, disillusionment and eventual triumph, that divorce is not the end. I highly recommend that anyone who is divorced and feeling alone in their fight to survive read Two Minus One to gain encouragement, clarity and hope.” – Lisa Duffy, Author, Speaker and Divorce Recovery Coach

About the Author

Kathryn Taylor was born at the Great Lakes Naval Station near Chicago, Illinois and spent much of her life in the Chicagoland area. When she entered first grade, reading came easily to Taylor. Decades before terms such as “peer tutoring” and “collaborative learning” had been coined, her teacher had an inspiring idea. She would allow Kathryn to assist classmates struggling to decode those pesky letter combinations and help them learn to read. Taylor experienced an undeniable sense of fulfillment helping her classmates and licking gold stars onto completed pages. The desire to become a teacher took root. Taylor enjoyed thirty years in the classroom and had taught in the schools of Illinois, California, and Virginia before her retirement and relocation to South Carolina. It was there where Taylor wrote her book, Two Minus One: A Memoir following the unexpected abandonment by her second husband. Taylor is an avid reader, enthusiastic traveler, and incurable beach lover. She resides outside of Charleston, SC, with her rescue dog, Lucy, where she can enjoy all three of her favorite past times.

God’s Answers to Young Teens’ Questions Volume 1: January-March

 Self-help, Christian, Kid’s Self-Help

Date Published: November 1, 2018

Publisher: Lucid Books

How can young people know they’re making the right decisions in their lives?

Kids between the ages of 10 and 15 often face significant confusions, challenges, and uncertainties in their life stages. Yet, numerous books and publications focus only on high school or college ages, while few speak to the pressing questions young teens or pre-teens face every day. The purpose of this book is to give junior high kids a yearlong study to find God’s specific answers to problems they face daily. Their issues may be like the topics facing high school and college kids, but they require a totally different perspective. What’s more, these younger kids are most likely facing issues for the first time and are left confused and frustrated.

This book will shed biblical light on issues such as:

 •Navigating friendships

•Dealing with embarrassment

•Loneliness

•Parent problems

•Dealing with bullying

•Dating

•Peer pressure

•Dealing with violence

‘Reaching New Heights’ gives young teens an avenue to learn what God says and how to apply God’s answers to their lives.
