Hidden (Fire and Iceland #1)
Paranormal Romance / Urban Fantasy
Date Published: October 31, 2018
Publisher: Evernight Publishing

After a breathtaking journey through Iceland, Vanessa Evanston finishes her dream vacation with her two best friends in the capital city of Reykjavik—and wakes up the next morning on the ground, on a tiny island 250 kilometers north, with no memory of how she got there.

Luckily, handsome and kind-hearted local Gunnar Heimirsson stumbles upon her—unluckily, he can’t explain her mysterious journey either. Nor can anyone explain why Vanessa soon discovers “last night” actually happened a year ago, and everyone thinks she’s dead.

Iceland is known for its folklore, but beyond the elves and mountain trolls, there are other creatures: beautiful, powerful, and vengeful, known as the huldufólk. Gunnar has been alive for a century, trapped by their curse after angering them. From the far flung Westfjords to the black sands of Reynisfjara, the answer to Vanessa’s missing year might be connected to Gunnar’s punishment—as well as his long-lost wife, Hera—but the truth lies somewhere in the realm of magic, myth, and love, and Vanessa has only just discovered fairy tales are real.

Her paranoia intensified, until she could no longer stay put. She felt like a child, quivering in the dark, wanting to run to her parents’ room. Truth be told, she’d give anything to run to her parents’ room right now. Thinking about that made her want to cry, on top of feeling alone and frightened.

She got up from the couch, grabbed her pillow and a blanket, and padded down the darkened hallway. She knew the door for the bathroom. The others were open, except for one. Hugging the pillow and blanket, still feeling like a little kid, she timidly knocked.

She heard movement inside the room. The door inched open and Gunnar peeked out. “What’s wrong?”

“I know this sounds dumb,” she said, her voice trembling and tears burning her eyes, “but I’m really, really scared right now. I don’t want to be alone.” A tear streaked down her cheek. “Can I stay with you? I’ll curl up in a corner or something.”

He opened the door fully, and the worry in his eyes faded. “It’s not dumb at all.”

She was momentarily distracted from her distress as Gunnar was shirtless, and his clothes were cruel for covering him up prior to this. His chest was broad, his shoulders wide and the rest of him beautifully toned. Combined with his tight, flat stomach—which she’d seen already—he looked like a damn fitness model. He wore sweat pants as well, which hung low on his hips.

She struggled not to stare. His hair was a mess and he looked soft and huggable. Or rather, climbable.

“Come in.” He stepped back so she could enter the room. “I won’t make you sleep in a corner.”

She walked in. The room smelled like him, like her t-shirt: a manly, musky scent with a touch of his fruity cologne. It was small and contained a double bed with a tall wooden headboard, a vanity-dresser combo, and a TV, next to a closet with a folding door. Across from the bed were two windows, the curtains open. The view looked out on the hills behind the house. She wondered if he left the curtains open to keep watch.

“Um.” He brushed against her as he stepped around her. “I’ll sleep on the floor, you can have the bed.” He started dragging pillows off.

She hesitated. It was his bed, and she had no right to run him out of it just because she was a scaredy-cat. “It’s big enough for both of us, I don’t mind.” She wiped her eyes. “If you don’t mind.”

He paused in removing the pillows. His eyes gleamed in the dim light. “Are you sure?”

She nodded and walked around to the other side, still clutching her blanket and pillow. “You’re a gentleman, aren’t you?” She managed a smile. “And I think I’ll be more likely to get some sleep if someone is close by. Especially someone who knows about … them. And how to fend them off.”

He tossed the pillows back on the bed. “I wouldn’t be in this situation if I knew how to fend them off.” There was humor in his voice, but it was dark.

She crawled into bed. “Just let me pretend.”

The mattress was soft, and she wrapped herself up in her blanket—not because she worried he would touch her, but because she felt safer in a cocoon. He crawled in beside her and slipped under the blanket that was on the bed. There was enough room they had a few feet of space between them.

She wondered if he’d chosen a big bed so he had room for female visitors. One couldn’t live a hundred years without some fun.

“Try to rest,” he murmured. “Don’t worry, they’ve never entered this house before.”

The faint blue light traced the sharp lines of his face, his hair soft against the pillow, eyes glittering. The bed smelled even more like him and it both comforted and distracted her.

“In any case…” He rolled his head so he was staring at the ceiling. “I think she made it perfectly clear she has no more words for us. They won’t try to make contact again. We won’t see them.”

She glanced at the windows, looking out on the murky twilight. Rain spattered the glass.

“Is that why you have the curtains open?” She snuggled down in her blanket.

He didn’t respond.

July 1986

Crescent Hollar Trailer Park

Gloucester City, New Jersey

Fresh, black pavement radiated visible heat; scorched grass crunched beneath Jordan’s feet; sweat drenched his shoulder-length, blonde hair, and it clung to his neck. The mobile home park’s road ended at a small store; he paid twenty-five cents for two ring-shaped lollipops, saved a pink candy, unwrapped a blue one and reclined on a canopy shaded bench.

A black and yellow butterfly fluttered toward him; sunlight clarified its translucent wings and turned it magical, otherworldly. Jordan stared at the creature hovering above his leg. It glided to his knee. Tiny feet danced on his bare skin, a slight tickle. Sparkling like gold dust; glowing, powdery residue transferred on his fingers. Airborn again, impulsively, he reached and knocked it to the ground; one wing beat up and down.

Humming distracted him, and he stepped on the butterfly as he crossed the road. Lily skipped across the grass in pink, canvas sneakers. Her long, cinnamon-colored hair billowed; it tapped her thin, white blouse below her shoulder blades and bounced with each step. A faint halo highlighted her lovely features. Enhanced by sapphire-colored stones in her ears, her blue eyes shined brighter than the butterfly. She smiled. Calescent stomach pain folded him in half. With gritted teeth, he straightened, took a step, smiled back at her, and offered the ring-pop from his pocket.

“Strawberry, my favorite.” She tugged the lollipop from its wrapper and slipped it into her mouth. Her eyes crinkled in the sun. She dragged the candy over her lips with a final sucking motion, lifted her hand and let the sunshine filter through the gem-shaped sugar. “Pretty,” she said.

Pain struck Jordan again, stronger. It radiated through his lower body. Lily held his hand and walked along the road’s edge. She stopped at a red and white toolshed at the corner of her backyard. Jordan peeked into her driveway, no car.

“Just one time, right?” Lily asked. She closed her eyes.

Jordan smothered her with his mouth; she panicked and struggled, but he closed in and restrained her. His mind emptied, his eyes went blank; a blinding drive took over, and he pressed her to the ground. Tear-filled eyes didn’t dissuade him.

A horn honked, and a door slammed near the house; he froze. Lily’s dad carried grocery bags. Jordan rolled. She ran toward home; he traced her body’s imprint in the grass and discovered a shimmering deep-blue earring.

A vice clamped his arm, and with a yank, he met angry eyes; he cowered inches below Lily’s father’s face.

“I think Ivy should come with us tomorrow.”

When I glanced up while at the dinner table on Saturday night, I had not expected to see Anna say those words. I wasn’t the only one to stare at her in surprise. Nothing had changed between us in three days, but now she was suddenly on my side? Why? What did she have to gain by it?

“Anna, I don’t think—” Cordelia started to say.

“Think about it,” Anna interrupted. I didn’t like the smile that curved her lips. “How will she marry well if she doesn’t meet anyone? She needs to be seen.”

Marriage? When had marriage ever come into it? And who was interested in me? I was so mixed up by what was going on I couldn’t feel happy about how much easier it had gotten to read their lips. When there were only six people in my life, I learned how their mouth moved for each word. It wasn’t like I had anything else to do.

Remy frowned. He looked just as bothered by the suggestion as I felt. He wasn’t the only one, either. Everyone was talking, and I couldn’t keep up with them all

“I don’t think…necessary,” Father said, his expression concerned. Simon said something at the same time which I missed altogether.

“Anna …not be cruel.” This came from Cordelia, who sent a worried glance at me. For a moment, I was caught between confusion and offense. Why did Cordelia think the idea of me getting married was cruel?

“Well, you don’t…she will stay here forever, can she?” Anna pointed out. Her expression had become smug. “In fact, I know someone…might have an interest in her.”

“Let’s discuss this another time, Anna.” Cordelia looked annoyed with her daughter.

“I don’t…Ivy wants to rush into…,” Father said, a frown creasing his forehead. He looked wholly unsettled by the idea of me marrying. What had he expected for my future?

I felt the tabletop jerk and, when everyone turned their heads towards the bottom of the table, I followed their gazes to Remy. Both of his hands were flat on the table as though he’d slammed them down. “Let Ivy have a choice in the matter,” he said.

Surprised expressions on their faces, the rest of the family moved their gazes to me. My cheeks heated up with a blush at their sudden scrutiny. Had they forgotten I was there or did they think they would know what was best for me?

“What do…want, Ivy?” Remy asked.

Did he mean to ask did I want to be married? It wasn’t a specific question, or at least, I didn’t have an exact answer.  I hadn’t thought of marriage as anything more than something that would happen in time. There was, however, one desire I did have.

“I want to go to town,” I signed, mouthing only the last word of my sentence.

“What did she say?” Cordelia asked, her expression frustrated.

To my surprise, it wasn’t Remy who answered her. Cordelia’s head twisted to the right, to where Simon was sitting on her left. “—to go with us,” my brother said. He had a half smile on his face as though the whole thing amused him. “She wants to go to church.”

Cordelia’s face showed alarm, though Father nodded. “That…that,” he said, reaching for the bowl of mashed potatoes. “I don’t think anything else need be said.”

“We should—” Whatever my step-mother intended to say, she was cut off by my father, though I missed what he said. Cordelia dropped her gaze to her plate and remained silent.

While I knew I should be concerned about what kind of repercussions my step-mother would come up with over this, I couldn’t keep my excitement down. Thanks to Anna and Remy, I was going to leave the ranch!

For as long as she can remember, Bethany Swafford has loved reading books. That love of words extended to writing as she grew older and when it became more difficult to find a ‘clean’ book, she determined to write her own. Among her favorite authors is Jane Austen, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Georgette Heyer.

When she doesn’t have pen to paper (or fingertips to laptop keyboard), she can generally be found with a book in hand. In her spare time, Bethany reviews books for a book site called More Than A Review.

The Elevator Game sample

The hands shot up. Mark walked back to the lectern and started taking the questions. They were the usual ones. The same ones that every time he did this the audience always wanted to ask. It was like they all got together online and planned out what they were going to say, when, and who was going to be the good guys and the bad. There were the skeptics and believers. Often, as now, he did not have to say much, but let them fight it out when certain issues were raised.

It went on like that and he was starting to feel tired, getting ready to indicate just one more question, when the skinny kid with the black beard and glasses perched on the end of his nose stepped up. Mark had noticed him near the back at the room, twitchy and nervous, wearing a parka with a big hood fringed in fur – far too warm for this time of year.

“Yes, you young man,” Mark said, putting on his best and most winning smile.

“Hello, Dr. Peterson,” the young man said. “What about your brother?”

There was silence in the room. Mark was momentarily stunned and he blinked in surprise. This was not the first time Todd had been brought up, but it had been a while. Todd used the last name “Wilson” for his online activities and the books he wrote, but sometimes you got an enterprising young man, like this one, who dug a little deeper and connected the names. It had been a very long time since someone had mentioned his brother, though, and Mark wasn’t prepared. It was always the little podunk college towns where this shit happened.

“What about him?” Mark happened.

“Well, your brother is Todd Wilson, right?” the young man was smiling now as if he smelled blood in the water. “The same Todd Wilson who’s become an Internet celebrity by conducting investigations into the paranormal? I believe he’s quite successful with his online podcast and YouTube channel and there’s been talk of him having some kind of ghost-hunting show on cable.”

“Yes, that is my brother,” Mark replied. Whenever people brought up Todd they always did it like this. As if the fact that his brother believed and did things differently than him was somehow some kind of accusation about his own work. “What does this have to do with me?”

“How does it feel to have a brother known for investigating the very things you decry?” the young man asked. “Does it bring tension? I guess I want to know what Thanksgiving dinner is like at your house?”

Mark laughed. When he did, so did others in the audience.

“Tell me, young man, do you have uncles or aunts or cousins or siblings that you disagree with? Not about these things, but maybe about religion or politics or things like that?”

The young man shrugged. “Yeah.”

“And yet you still get together with those people and you still love them, right? You still manage to have quiet holiday dinners and not come to blows?”

The young man looked a little sheepish. “Yeah, of course.”

“Well, that’s what happens when my brother and I get together,” Mark concluded. “We disagree about how we view the universe, but how my brother chooses to make a living does not factor into my work. Actually, you should read some of his books, they’re quite good. I just read them as fiction, whereas he would tell you that they were not.”

The young man opened his mouth as if he wanted to say more, but Mark held up his hand.

“Now, I think that’s all for tonight,” he said. “The hour grows late and I know I’m tired, so let us get to the book signing portion of the evening before I’m up signing books until dawn.”

The young man looked disappointed, but soon the rest of the audience was up and Mark was off to the signing table. The line seemed to stretch out to infinity beyond him, and he posed for photos and signed dozens of books. He was expecting that young man to show up and try to continue his conversation, but the fur-trimmed face seemed to have lost interest.

Hours later, when Mark met up with his publicist and they headed for the car that would take him back to the hotel, he ran his hands through his hair.

“I hate when they bring up Todd,” Mark said as they settled into the back of the car. “I wonder if they bring up me at his signings?”

This tour his publicist was a young blond girl right out of college. She chewed gum and Mark though her name was Penny, but was never sure so he avoided using her name as much as possible.

Excerpt for Dead Lions Don’t Roar
x
A motivating and inspiring book of poetry should always leave the reader with thoughts about personal development and doses of inspiration … and that is exactly what Dead Lions Don’t Roar does. Whilst the poem entitled the name of the collection speaks volumes about using our gifts and talent and finding our own unique roar, there are a number of other poems that share the essence of the book. Here is a sneak peak of one such poem:
x
If Men were God
There would be no more us,
Long Dead and buried,
Forgotten with the times,
An atonement for our sins
If men were God….
x
This poem makes us think about what each of our individual role and purpose is in life, which will then motivate us to achieve…our very best. This is the entire purpose of Dead Lion’s Don’t Roar.

About The Book
x
Dead Dogs Don’t Bark is the second poetry collection from the acclaimed author, Tolu A. Akinyemi. With a similar tone and style to Dead Lions Don’t Roar (Tolu’s first poetry collection) this follow up masterpiece is nothing short of pure motivation. The poems cover a range of topics that many in life are aware of, that the Author himself has experienced and that we all, whatever our age, need support in. Beautifully written, the poems speak volumes to all age groups as they feature finding your inner talent, celebrating your individuality and distinct voice. The poetry collection has didactic elements for evaporating the effects of peer pressure and criminality amongst many others. Also covering mental health, relationships, career focus, and general life issues, the poetry is bitter sweet, amusing and thought provoking in turns.

Excerpt for Dead Dogs Don’t Bark
x
A follow on to the success of Dead Lions Don’t Roar, Dead Dogs Don’t Bark goes one step further. As well as self-motivation, Dead Dogs Don’t Bark digs deep into society, into behavior and into relationships that make existence worthwhile. An insight into the true power of the collection rings strong in the following snippet:
x
Cuddle up to Excellence
Else Mediocrity can catch up with you like a heatwave
Released in full force like a loaf oven baked
The days of long service awards are over
If your dream is to buy a Range Rover
Then you have to embrace excellence
x
This poem reinforces that it is healthy to have dreams and ambitions but that we must remember to strive for them and not just expect them … not taking things for granted and putting your best foot forward in life encapsulates the resonating theme of Dead Dogs Don’t Bark.

New Release: The Hidden Children (The Lost Grimoire #1) by Reshma K. Barshikar

About the Book:
‘What price would you pay to be extraordinary? What would you do to speak to a butterfly?

Shayamukthy cruises through life: shooting hoops, daydreaming and listening to her favourite books. Even moving from the US to India, to a new school, a new culture, hasn’t really rattled her. But something isn’t right anymore and it begins when ‘New Girl’ joins the school.

She pulls Shui into a world of magic and wonderment, a world she has been hidden from all her life. What starts as a quest to look for a lost book, hurtles Shui into a world where people live in trees, talk to the dead and speak to butterflies.

But like all power, magic comes at a steep price, and under all things wondrous lie demons waiting to crawl out. The more Shui learns, the more she doubts everything and everyone around her.

Will she be able to master her powers, or will they devour her and everyone she loves?

Read an Excerpt:

I think I am
ordinary. I lack purpose. Boohoo you think, typical teenager angst. But if I
died tomorrow, it wouldn’t impact anyone’s life except my parents’. My friends,
on the other hand, they have a life. See them there, yes there, to the right,
next to the banyan tree behind the basketball court. You see a slightly pudgy
boy and a beautiful girl? The boy’s name is Jai. The girl’s name is Nallini.
Both have purpose. Jai wants to write comic books. He wants to be like Neil
Gaiman or something, some famous comic-book guy. Nallini wants to be an
actress, the next Deepika Padukone – that, and to win next year’s gold medal in
Jujitsu.

She has absolutely no
problems reconciling the inherent contradictions in both her desires.

I want nothing, need
nothing, except something to need. I can’t see past today even to tomorrow; I
have a hard enough time figuring out what I am now. I am not from a broken
home, unless you count the fact that parts of the building I live in are
falling apart. I am not poor, not like Anuki Chabria who got called out of her
exam because her parents couldn’t pay her fees. I do not have acne bursting on
my face, making me look like a human cheese grater. I am just, well, ordinary.
So could you really blame me? Blame me for wanting to be special? Blame me for
wanting to be fierce? To be like Storm from the X-Men, or like Beyoncé? When I
look back now, at everything that has happened in the last few months, I
realise I’m just as much to blame as her. The big question – well, it’s not a
big question at all, really, because it’s all rubbish now, because you can’t go
back. Even I can’t go back. So the absurd question everyone around me
seems to asking is – would I have acted differently, would I rather NOT be the
person I am now?

No.

And neither would
you. What price wouldn’t you pay to be extraordinary, to ride the wind,
to float with unicorns, to be the one chosen…? Because, you see, I’ve gotten
into some serious trouble and want to explain myself. I didn’t mean for things
to happen. I didn’t mean for someone to die. So I ask you – wouldn’t you have
said yes if someone said – ‘Do you want to learn how to speak to a
butterfly?’
