x
Five fictional, compelling true-to-life stories about how people can be
manipulated by others.
x
Manipulators are everywhere. At first
these devious and calculating people can be hard to spot, because
that is their way. They are often masters of disguise: witty,
disarming, even charming in public – tricks to snare their prey –
but then they revert to their true self of being controlling and
angry in private. Their main aim: to dominate and use others to
satisfy their needs, with a complete lack of compassion and empathy
for their victim.
x
In this collection of short novellas, you
meet people like you and me, intent on living happy lives, yet each
of them, in one way or another, is caught up and damaged by a
manipulative individual.
x
First you meet Tess, whose past is
haunted by a wrong decision, then young, successful and well balanced
Sophie, who is drawn into the life of a little boy and his troubled
father. Next, there is teenage Holly, who is intent on making a
better life for herself, followed by a manipulator himself, trying to
make sense of his irreversible incarceration. Lastly, there is Lisa,
who has to face a parent’s biggest regret. All stories highlight to
what extent abusive manipulation can distort lives and threaten our
very feeling of self-worth.
x
x
x
To her dismay, Tess seemed to have nodded off, her face looking pale and slightly ashen. That was when she could not bear it any longer and silently crept over

to where Tess was sitting and already emitting small snoring sounds, while the music was still accompanying the next enthusiastic dancing couple on screen. She whispered Tess’s name a few times and then, without any further thought, raised her friend’s sleeve to the top of her arm.

She was speechless at what she discovered. Tess’s arm was surrounded by a row of interlocked shackles. They were thick and black and she was taken aback by the courage of this old lady for choosing such a strong design. At the front of the arm though, the link was broken and instead of the metal chain, small detached pieces were progressively floating up her upper armwhere they took on the shape

of a group of birds flying off towards the top of her shoulder. Sandra sat back with a great sigh, pulled the sleeve back down and reached for the cover that laid by her side. While she covered Tess’s legs and ever so gently placed another cushion behind her head, she could sense her friend’s hand, the skin dry and cool, reaching for hers. She was startled by the unexpected gesture, her thoughts racing with amixture of guilt and embarrassment. She knelt close to her, holding her hand for a while, when she heard a small whisper coming from Tess’s mouth and she lowered her ear, asking her to repeat what she had just said.

‘Thank you so much… I’m sorry for leaving you so soon, my love.’ Sandra’s eyes widened in disbelief. What on earth was Tess talking about? Before she could set her forehead into a deep frown, she sensed her heart drop into the centre of the stomach. It is too late, she told herself.

The room suddenly felt oppressive and stuffy and the air was still with foreboding. Sandra got up and frantically opened one of the dining room windows, knowing the feeling all too well, even though it had been a while since she last experienced it. The fresh gust of air blowing into her face was rejuvenating and refreshing but she was frightened to turn round. In the nearby trees she could hear the birds singing and twittering as if it were just another normal autumn afternoon.

She took another deep breath, her eyes streaming now with tears of frustration, and resolutely walked back to where Tess was now slumped awkwardly in her chair. The meaning of the tattoo was staring her straight in the face. Tess had lost her imaginary wings before she had ever learned to fly.

And she had not seen it coming.

Owr, the master creator, has tucked the invisible into the hem of the visible, allowing the children to peek between the tightly drawn threads to study how the spiritual affects the physical.

Designer: Damonza
Publisher: Acorn Publishing

Newly widowed and on the threshold of seventy, Lizzie Warton questions the value of her remaining years. Uncharacteristically, she decides for the first time in her life to do what she wants, instead of what everyone expects.

Against the wishes of family and friends, she sets out for Africa to work at a Ugandan middle school. When she lands at night in the Entebbe airport, her hosts are not there to meet her. Near panic, she hires a local taxi. The driver drugs her, steals everything, and dumps her limp body in a slum. Waking in the dark, she feels someone tugging off her shoes.

Without money, a passport, clothes, or medications, Lizzie is forced to start over and find a way to survive. Soon she learns that nothing in Africa is as it appears. The grind of daily life in the third-world is beyond anything Lizzie imagined. Nevertheless, encouraged by budding friendships in surprising places, and against every sensible instinct she’s ever developed, Lizzie’s own personal search for meaning becomes the grand adventure of a lifetime.

Excerpt

“Hey, muzungu! Over here!”

“Lady, best prices in Owino!”

“I have jeans. You want jeans? New styles from America!”

“Hey! Pretty white lady! Over here!”

“Best quality! Best prices! Today, only for you, muzungu!”

“I have a new shipment! Come and see!”

Muzungu! Lady, what you need?”

Lizzie was sick of the accented voices shouting at her. She had yet to see another white woman in the claustrophobic market. Warned in advance, she had ignored the hands on her arms, the fingers trailing across her fingers, even the nudges to move her toward their shops, but she was fed up with the vendors’ constant calls aimed at her. Still, she doggedly maintained her wooden smile, even though she was gritting her teeth behind it.

At one point, a vendor called out a question in Luganda and someone else answered it. Lizzie was sure it had something to do with her. Laughter broke out and other voices chimed in with more quips. Grinning faces nodded at her as she walked away.

Lizzie shot a questioning look at Mrs. Birungi, who rolled her eyes, even though a smile tugged at her mouth. “It is nothing – just vendor talk. Ignore it. We need to go over that way.” Birungi pointed to a split in the congested path ahead, and steered them to the right.

Afiya pulled abreast of Lizzie a little later as they bobbed through a brief open place in the moving crowd. “They said they not sure if you are white or Ugandan.”

“What?”

“It was joke. Our people always make jokes.”

“How was it a joke?”

“Somebody said you half Ugandan.” The girl suppressed a grin.

“I don’t get it.”

“They said you have white top but Ugandan bottom.” Afiya smiled broadly as she said the line.

Lizzie looked back at her, puzzled.

“This kind bottom.” Afiya patted her own rump. “Word means both things. They admired your…bottom.” Afiya couldn’t help but giggle as she repeated the word.

Lizzie understood and sighed. “Well, I guess that’s not the worst thing I’ve ever heard.” In her mind, a little appreciative thought blossomed at still being noticed in that way, at all. She hastily chided herself and kept walking, but her hips now swayed a tiny bit more, nevertheless.

The Enigma of a Widow
The Widows of Aristocracy Book 2
by Linda Rae Sande
Genre: Historical Regency Romance
x

Having lost her husband in the Battle of Ligny, Lady Lydia Barrymore is
determined to resume her work for the Foreign Office when her
mourning period is over. She’s spent a year solving puzzles and
assembling dissected maps to maintain her skills. Her first
assignment has her perplexed, though – do what she must to help a
fellow operative recover his sanity. Although she finds the man
rather beautiful, Sir Donald has also proved most annoying.
x
Newly knighted Adonis Truscott returned from the Continent with a tendency
to get lost in his thoughts. His frequent episodes of staring into
space have his sister claiming he’s a candidate for Bedlam – and he’s
not about to argue. He doesn’t always remember where or when he was
when he recovers, but he remembers he made a promise, and he’s
determined to keep it. A promise to provide protection for Lydia,
whether she wants it or not.
x
When a puzzle’s directions require Lydia to solve it with the help of
Adonis, she discovers the man harbors secrets that may be impossible
to reveal. With her own sanity in jeopardy – a year-long mystery
involving her late husband may be more annoying and dangerous than an
errant knight – Lydia will have to piece together a solution that
suits them both in The Enigma of a Widow.

Lydia sighed and made her way down the stairs and to the vestibule. Although Jenkins held a mantle, she gave him a shake of her head. “Not tonight,” she said as she sailed out the front door and hurried to the waiting town coach. Although she couldn’t see her breaths in the night air, it was rather chilly. She almost turned back for the mantle, but remembered why it would be counter to what she hoped to achieve.

Stepping into the dark town coach, Lydia frowned when she realized the exterior lanterns weren’t lit. She was about to chide the driver when she realized she wasn’t alone.

“I nearly sat on you,” she murmured as she settled into the squabs.

“I was rather hoping you would.”

The sound of Oliver Preston’s voice should have sent shivers down her spine. Should have had her breathless with anticipation of whatever he had planned for the two of them as the coach made its way to Drury Lane. But Lydia found herself feeling annoyed.

Even more annoyed than she used to feel when thinking of Adonis Truscott.

“I thought you would be on your wedding trip by now,” Lydia whispered. “Whatever are you doing in here?”

Oliver managed a look of hurt that Lydia could make out despite the darkened interior of the coach. “Hoping to steal a kiss or two… or more,” he said in that voice he used when he thought he was being irresistible. “I leave in the morning.”

Rather disgusted by the rogue’s behavior, Lydia rolled her eyes. “You are a married man now, Oliver. Except for an occasional dance at a ball, I intend to have nothing to do with you.”

“Oh, Lydia, my darling…” Oliver started to argue. But Lydia would have none of it. She was supposed to be on a mission tonight. The last thing she needed was the distraction of a man who was supposed to be a newlywed—and out of her life.

“Now get out of this coach before I have my driver bodily remove you,” she warned in a voice loud enough to be overheard by the driver.

“Really, Lydia. You’re being unreasonable,” Oliver argued.

The door to the town coach suddenly opened.

“The lady has made her wishes known, sir. You would be wise to honor them.”

Lydia blinked when she realized the voice wasn’t that of her driver but rather belonged to someone else.
