Chapter 1

The raw, earthly smell of the first drops of rain signaled the onset of the monsoon of 1962. Ten year old Rohan watched it from his window and inhaled deeply. He felt like he wanted to draw in as much as possible of this place that he loved so dearly. The rain had washed clean the gardens and roads of Bangalore. A city of sheer beauty, it was like a large painting suspended in time, being restored to its original brilliance with one masterly stroke. Bangalore with flower-laden trees, small lakes and numerous gardens was wonderful to behold. All was quiet, calm and serene.
 x
But even his love for Bangalore could not match his passion for playing outdoors. His face registered dismay when the drizzle turned into a downpour and sheets of rain hid the verdant trees and the glitter of the rocks beyond the playing fields. He would lose valuable time waiting for the rain to subside to play cricket with his friends.
 x
Drizzly weather or what his dad called ‘English weather’ never hampered him like a monsoon onslaught did. It was as familiar to him as the streets and their English names – Lloyds Road, Cline Road, Hutchins Road and Davis Road. The English had definitely made Bangalore into a ‘Little England’ and left behind a large community of Anglo Indians. A proud community of mixed cultures, they were concentrated in the northern part of the city called the ‘Cantt’ (short for Cantonment) along with a cosmopolitan mix of settlers from other states and countries.
 x
The southern part, the original old Bangalore was known as the ‘City’ area. The Cantt area, extending from Richmond Town to Frazer Town, had spacious bungalows with servant’s quarters, private lawns and gardens. It was a township by itself, with lakes, gardens, theatres, restaurants, bars and exclusive clubs. The Cantt area was nothing without the Anglo-Indians whose exuberance and fun loving nature enhanced the charm of life in Bangalore. They lived for the day and never gave the morrow a thought. Romantic at heart, partying was their
greatest pastime. A few couples, country liquor, lots to eat and they would dance till the stars drooped and went down under.
 x
Rain, rain go away, come again another day,” Rohan whispered urgently, and was gratified to see the rain gradually stop. Now, he could go out to the beckoning playground and join his friends for a game of cricket, yet another legacy of the British.
x
“Ma, I am going to play”, he yelled.
x
“Come back on time, Rohan”, his mother warned. “Or you know how your father reacts!” Rohan ran out, looking back to wave to his mother at the door.
 x
They were all there – Peter, Oscar, Roy, Philip, Akbar, Kiran, Akshay, Arun, Joe, Allan, Mahmud and Inder. The stumps were up, the teams chosen and the game was on. Cricket was an obsession with Rohan.
x
“Come on Rohan, we must win today”, urged Inder.
x
 “What high hopes”, teased Oscar.
x

Peter always red in the face, yelled, “Oscar, shut your bloody mouth and start batting.”

Excerpt

As she stared into his dark eyes she realized how much she trusted him, and relied on him. That was something rare for her. The only people she trusted as much were her sisters.
I’m in love with him.
The thought blasted through her brain with the force of a tsunami. The tension of the last few weeks, the insecurity, the mistrust, the fear, slipped easily from her shoulders. For the first time, her mind was clear. She was in love with Ethan and she didn’t want to wait anymore. She wanted him. She wanted him to be her first, her last.
Finding courage she didn’t know she possessed, Harper slid off the stool and walked around the island. She plucked the wine glass from his hand and set it on the counter, then placed his hand on her breast. “Make love with me, Ethan.”
A fire lit in his eyes, telling her he wanted her, too. But there was a question there, a hesitation. “Are you sure?”
She’d never been more sure of anything in her life. “Yes.”
“Harper—”
“Shhh. Let’s not talk anymore.” She placed one finger over his lips, then stood on her tiptoes and kissed him.
Ethan’s reaction was lightning swift. He wrapped his arms around her and brought her close, his mouth descending on hers in a wild, warm kiss. Their tongues tangled, slid over each other. She’d missed his touch, his taste. She moaned, and in the sound she heard thirty-two years of longing.
For this. For him.

About the Author

When Jana Richards read her first romance novel, she immediately knew two things: she had to commit the stories running through her head to paper, and they had to end with a happily ever after. She also knew she’d found what she was meant to do. Since then she’s never met a romance genre she didn’t like. She writes contemporary romance, romantic suspense, and historical romance set in World War Two, in lengths ranging from short story to full length novel. Just for fun, she throws in generous helpings of humor, and the occasional dash of the paranormal. Her paranormal romantic suspense “Seeing Things” was a 2008 EPPIE finalist.
In her life away from writing, Jana is an accountant/admin assistant, a mother to two grown daughters, and a wife to her husband Warren. She enjoys golf, yoga, movies, concerts, travel and reading, not necessarily in that order. She and her husband live in Winnipeg, Canada with their Pug/Terrier cross Lou and several unnamed goldfish. Book Blitz: Creole Moon: Book of Roots by S.T. Holmes

Fantasy

Date Published: February 2018

Publisher: Toplink Publishing

Creole Moon Book of Roots by S T Holmes is a fantasy fiction set in the early 1900s.  Mamuska, the voodoo priest, needs to return to his home in the Louisiana swamp to renew his strength and vigor, but Ayida, serpent goddess and mother of the demi gods, forbids him to take his wife, Ophelia.  They argue until Ayida becomes angry and conjures a storm as a warning to Mamuska, but he doesn’t heed the warning and slips his wife out of their cosmic home and back into the swamp.

It is Mardi Gras in New Orleans and the year of the Luperci festival, a time for forgiveness in the magic world and correcting wrong doings from magic to right. Unite with our hero, George Genois, from Creole Moon The Betrayal, as he finds his way back into the city at just the right time. He is befriended by a witch named Sephora who gives him shelter and protection, and in return is looking for help from the Luxican, George’s alter being in her quest for the source of all magic. He reluctantly agrees to help her as long as it doesn’t interfere with his plans of revenge and setting things right again, but unknown to him, she is in a battle with her goddess sister who wants to find the coveted Book of Roots first.

The treasure hunt ended in the swamp at the hut of the voodoo priest and priestess. Ophelia had control of a portion of the book of roots but she had no idea of its value as a whole.  She only wanted to keep it away from everyone including her husband, Mamuska. As hard as the others tried to resurrect the book, Ophelia was working equally as hard to keep it hidden, but her powers were no match for the Luxican. Finally, the Luxican was able to succeed in breaking through the magical portal and the precious book dropped to earth next to the heads of the Luxican and Sephora.  Before the purification ceremony could take place, the witch’s sister intervened and a fight broke out between them. This is sibling rivalry at its finest as the sisters fight to win control of the book, but only one will prevail.

George is pulled into the middle of a turbulent battle that draws him deeper into the realm of magic with exceptionally powerful wizards and high priests as allies fighting against dark spirits and other forces of good and evil.  The pagan purification ceremony begins but is fraught with a number of interruptions from Drumangos, dark spirits from the tombs to Sephora’s royal family. It is not until the end of the ceremony that the Luxican realizes he is the key to finding the book of roots and saving the world of magic and all of it must be done before Mardi Gras day ends and the last toll of the midnight cathedral bell is sounded.

This Mardi Gras festival is like none ever seen before or will ever see again in the future.

Excerpt

She scanned the room for Liam, pausing in her search to admire the white and navy blue paper streamers and balloons decorating the school gym. She felt a tap on her shoulder and turned around. Liam was standing behind her. He wore his usual leather jacket, but beneath it he sported a nice dark blue button-down dress shirt—not flannel—and a black pair of jeans. For the first time since she’d met him, he was without the hoodie and she got a clear, unobstructed view of his face. He was cute. His skin was a deep bronzy tan and his hair was as black up close as it had appeared from afar; short and stick straight. His almond shaped eyes were also dark, a brown so deep they were almost black.

He turned his head, distracted by something over her shoulder. The strobe light from the DJ stationed across the room swept over him. It lit up his face and glinted off an earring in his left lobe. A little thrill went through her body. Liam seemed like a good guy, but he was looking more than ever like a bad boy.

“So… now what?” he asked. His gaze darted around the room uncomfortably.

“Now we dance.”

His eyebrows shot up. “I don’t dance.”

Valerie laughed and grabbed his hand. “Everyone dances. Some just do it better than others. Don’t worry, nobody here can dance well.” She tugged his arm until he reluctantly complied. The DJ was playing an upbeat pop song by Kedaisha, former Peace resident turned superstar, and when they reached the outskirts of the dance floor she dropped his hands, raised her arms in the air, and fell into step with the beat. Liam shuffled awkwardly from foot to foot. She reached out again and grabbed both his hands in hers, trying to get him to loosen up. He was still stiff as a board, but she could see a smile tugging at the corners of his lips.

The song changed and a slow country ballad began. Liam dropped Valerie’s hands and ran one through his hair, sending it sticking up in sexy disarray. His gaze wandered around the dance floor and he rubbed the back of his neck. It was as though he were searching for an escape route. It was cute, she thought.

She reached out and placed her hands on his shoulders. His body froze in place and his eyes shifted back to meet hers.

“You’re supposed to put your hands on my waist,” she instructed softly, offering him a kind smile.

“Right,” he said. He gently placed his hands on either side of her body and they swayed to the music in a slow circle.

“So… why did you bid on me?” She bit her lower lip, then released it. She hoped she hadn’t smudged her lipstick. When he had spoken up and outbid Chris she’d been so grateful that there was a chance Chris might not win, she hadn’t even stopped to consider why Liam would throw away that much money on a date with a girl he barely knew.

“I hate guys like Chris.” He met her gaze. “When he placed that first bid, he had this cocky look on his face that made me want to punch him.”

Valerie grinned.

“So I did one better. I bid against him. Besides, he really is a tool and you’re…nice. You shouldn’t have to be stuck with him for one minute, let alone a whole night.”

“Thank you,” she said.

Her voice was so soft he probably couldn’t hear her over the music. He must have figured it out though, because he said, “You’re welcome.”

They swayed silently for a few beats, then Liam said, “So… it’s not that I’m not enjoying this, but how long do we have to actually dance at this dance?”

She threw her head back and laughed, her arms still circled around his neck. “We can take a break after this song.”

His body visibly relaxed at her proclamation. She hoped he hated dancing in general, not dancing with her specifically. The song ended shortly thereafter and Valerie removed her arms from his neck. His hands lingered at her waist a moment too long before he dropped them to his sides.

Isoline…”

Isoline gasped as she opened her eyes. He was here…again…always…

Isoline…”

She climbed out of bed, her hands gripping her satin robe as she stood, but when she looked back, the bed was gone, as were the walls of her room. She wrapped the robe around herself as the fog crept in around her ankles. She was somewhere outside. She could feel the grass under her feet and the dampness in the air, yet she was not cold. The strange sensations told her that none of this was real…yet she knew it was.

Isoline…” he called to her again.

“I’m here,” she replied softly. “Show yourself.” She knew he would not, but still she tried to convince him to reveal his face. In the five years he had been coming to her in her dreams, she had not seen who he was, but she could feel he had gotten closer to her.

She took a step forward. Just because she was alone in a dream with a strange man did not mean she could not enjoy a short walk. She had been coming here for so long, this place no longer terrified her.

It was a large open glade, with grass up to her knees,  surrounded by forest. She had tried many times to reach the edge of the glade, but she had never made it that far. A pale blue moon lighted her way. She clutched tightly to the robe at her chest and ran the tips of her fingers along the edges of the grass as she walked. She shivered, not from cold, but from the way the grass tickled her bare calves as she walked.

She heard footsteps behind her. She slowly turned her head, but there was no one there, as usual. She continued her walk, and she heard the footsteps again, closer this time.

“I want to see you,” she said. “It is time, don’t you think?”

He did not respond, but she felt the wind lightly touch the ends of her long dark hair. No…it wasn’t the wind. It was him. She knew it was. She shivered again.

“If you cannot reveal yourself to me you need to stop bringing me here,” she said. “I…” She had delayed in telling him the truth. This man in her dreams. She shook her head, disappointed with herself. What was she afraid of? Offending a figment of her imagination?

But what she knew to be true and what she knew to be reasonable and logical warred in her mind. She knew she was dreaming. But she also knew this was much more than a dream. But if it was more than a dream, what was it? It was the unknown that scared her more than the dream itself. She no longer feared the dream as she once did. She actually longed for it. She did not know what caused the dreams to happen. There seemed to be no logical order to when they happened. One night, two nights, three nights could pass before she would find herself here. When too many nights passed that she was not awakened by him calling her name, she would miss him. Miss this place.

And yet, as a dream, she could not let it stop her from living.

But she did. She had for too long. She had to put an end to it. It was time to focus on the world of the waking.

“I am getting married,” she finally said in one quick breath.

The world stilled. For the first time in a dream, she felt cold. She pulled her robe more tightly around her and could see the crystals of her own breath before her.

“Do not be angry,” she said. “You know we cannot continue like this.”

We. As if she had a choice in being here. She could not will the dreams to come to her. She had tried. She could not change the content of the dreams. She had tried that as well. And yet…she wanted to be here. She wanted to see this man who had called to her all these years. She wanted to know him. To touch him. To see him. But if he could not give her that, she could not keep coming here.

“It is dishonorable to my future husband,” she said. “I cannot keep coming to you from my marriage bed. It is disloyal.”

From over her shoulder, she could see him breathing. He was right behind her. Her own breath stilled. They were so close. If only she could touch him.

“Just show me your face,” she panted, “and I will end the engagement.”

The hairs on her arms prickled. He was right there, so close. Almost touching her but not quite. She had to look. She turned to face him.

And he was gone.

She stood alone in the field.

“Who are you?” she yelled.

Glimpses of Wilderness
The Glimpses Series Book 1
by Lee Ann Ward
Genre: YA Romance

 x
No nightmares about my dad’s car crashing or my sister’s tiny face
vanishing in a window of red. No, not anymore. Now when I sleep I
fall into an expanse of frozen wilderness, the other life I’ve lived…
 x
The one I’ve lived with him.
 x
Anna experiences vivid dreams from a past-life she lived in the 1800s with
her husband Robert and their children in the wilderness of the
Michigan Territory. Much like her own mother grieving the man and
child she lost, Anna can’t simply let go of the memories that haunt her.
 x
But when she runs into Robert in this lifetime, a whirlwind of their past
lives—and deaths—rocks her modern world to the core. What will
she be willing to risk to spend every lifetime with Robert?
 x
In the twists and turns of “repeating” their lives over and over
through time, Anna must sacrifice everything for a glimpse of
immortal love.

x
I can still feel his touch on my skin and his lips on my mouth. I sink deeper into the covers and close my eyes so tightly I see stars. I want to be with Robert a little longer. I’m not ready to leave, never want to let him go. But now my face is too wet with tears to sleep. Robert’s gone, trapped in our wilderness memories until I’m lucky enough to dream again. And I’m here without him. Always here…

I swipe the tears until the remnants of eyeliner I failed to remove last night are simply black smudges on my face. She stares back at me from the mirror—the Anna of the wild, the Anna who misses her husband and babies, the Anna who’s as broken as her mother, no matter how hard she tries to pretend she’s okay. Me…

How can I accuse Mom of living in the past and never letting go when I’m holding on to a past from a couple hundred years ago? I know what I have to do. I pick up my phone again and open Facebook. No one will ever need to ask about my relationship status again. I type his name and read my new status update: Anna Berkeley is in a relationship with William Hull.

Spotlight: And Then I am Gone: A Walk with Thoreau by Mathias B. Freese

Title: And Then I Am Gone: A Walk with Thoreau
Author: Mathias B. Freese
Genre: Non-Fiction, Memoir
Formats: Paperback & eBook
Published by: Wheatmark
ISBN: 978-1627875387
Pub. Date: September 22, 2017
Number of pages: 117 pages

And Then I Am Gone: A Walk with Thoreau tells the Story of a New York City man who becomes an Alabama man. Despite his radical migration to simpler living and a late-life marriage to a saint of sorts, his persistent pet anxieties and unanswerable questions follow him. Mathias Freese wants his retreat from the societal “it” to be a brave safari for the self rather than cowardly avoidance, so who better to guide him but Henry David Thoreau, the self-aware philosopher who retreated to Walden Pond “to live deliberately” and cease “the hurry and waste of life”? In this memoir, Freese wishes to share how and why he came to Harvest, Alabama (both literally and figuratively), to impart his existential impressions and concerns, and to leave his mark before he is gone.
