Spotlight: Stranger Love by Richard Woolley

Spun around the real events of December 1642, when Dutchman Abel Tasman first sighted New Zealand and Maori people first saw Europeans, STRANGER LOVE is a tale seen through the eyes of Tasman’s young cousin, Jakob, and the daughter of a Maori chieftain, Te Ao-mihia. While the Dutch record of what took place is well-known through three journals of the voyage, this book also attempts, for the first time, to recreate how Maori might have experienced the ultimately tragic clash of cultures.

Historical Background

In August 1642, Abel Tasman sailed from Batavia (present day Jakarta) with two ships, a team of officers, a crew of sailors and a complement of soldiers at the behest of the United East Indies Company (VOC). They were in search of the Great Southland, which was assumed to stretch from New Holland (Australia) to South America and to be a place with gold, spices and people ready to trade. The Ngati Tumatakokiri, who lived around the Mohua, a bay renamed Murderer’s Bay because of events Tasman’s arrival triggered, and now known as Golden Bay, were a Maori iwi who had migrated across the straits from Whanganui in the North Island of New Zealand/Aotearoa one hundred years before Tasman’s visit. Since that time, they had been driven back to the West of the South Island’s top by later Maori migrations, and in particular by incursions of the Rangitane iwi.

About the Author

the-storytellers-book-author-kevin-flemingKevin Fleming has lived in Liverpool, England, all his life, born into a family with roots in Ireland, Yorkshire and London. All his family apart from he and his wife have long since left Liverpool to spread across the globe, even as far as New Zealand. He feels as though his ancestors all congregated in Liverpool, dropped him off then quietly left.

Even as a child he wanted to write a book but never had the patience to continue beyond the first page. Despite many more failed attempts through his teens, the thought of completing a novel stayed with him as an adult working in telecommunications and afterwards running his own business. In 2012 he decided he’d been employed enough for one lifetime and concentrated on writing.

After all the years of trying, ‘The Storyteller’s Book’ finally arrived, quickly followed by ‘The Mines of Kothkish’, ‘The Warlords of Shreen’ and finally ‘Carnival of the Otherworld’, to form the series, The Chronicles of Midway.

Married for over thirty years, he has a daughter and son who have now left home and are building lives for themselves elsewhere in England.

Review by BeachBoundBooks

Pickled Pumpkin Pie is a charming picture book, told in delightful rhyme, and filled with colorful and fun illustrations. It’s Thanksgiving and Uncle Pete can’t wait to eat, but it’s not turkey, potatoes, or cranberries he’s after. Uncle Pete is waiting for dessert and not just any dessert. He wants
pickled pumpkin pie. As the scrumptious meal comes to an end Uncle Pete’s excitement builds. Will he finally get his Thanksgiving wish? Pickled Pumpkin Pie is well written, engaging, and highly entertaining. The book also contains several activities and of course gives readers a chance to create their own pickled pumpkin pie. This is certain to become a fast holiday favorite among children and adults. I recommend picking up a copy.

Spotlight: The Deadly Secret by Ann Frewer

Why has an eccentric old scientist been acting even more strangely than usual?

Who owns the yellow van that mysteriously appears everywhere?

Will Baninjano be saved from certain peril?

This is a tale of growing suspense as Princess Emily and the Royal Pets – Albert, Poppy, Jacob and Carrie the cat – are forced into a fearsome battle to keep the Deadly Secret free from falling into enemy hands. Remarkable illustrations by Princess Emily (with a few by Poppy) help explain the various twists and turns in this extraordinary adventure, as battling against overwhelming odds it seems they face disaster…

The vibrant, colourful illustrations in this book make this tale extraordinary.

“’Emily,’ squeaked Poppy, ‘I need you to put those wings on me.’

‘Of course you don’t.  They’re for humans to wear, not dogs,’ said Emily, paying her very little attention. But this was what Poppy had expected and it didn’t put her off in the slightest. Standing on her hind legs, she began to scrabble at Emily’s arm, yelping ‘please’ with every scrabble.

‘Oh very well,’ agreed Emily impatiently, keen to finish her sum and leave, ‘but only for a moment mind.’  And as quickly as she could Emily tied the wings onto Poppy with a bright red ribbon.

Poppy was ecstatic. At last she had them on. First she stood completely still, to get the feel of those marvellous wings towering above her.  Then she took one or two steps around the room to get used to their wobble.  Next she jogged round the room to make certain they wouldn’t fall off.  That done, she was ready for everybody to see what she was about to do. With an eager bark, she cried, ‘Watch me, I’m going to fly!’ and shot out of the room.”

Spotlight: An Occupational Hazard by James Wrethman

The Ventura Casino is a glittering arena where the super-rich go to pit their wealth against chance, and admire the beautiful Chicas who deal at the tables.

But behind the scenes lurks a corrupt world of credit-fixing, prostitution and rape – a world that only a few brave employees dare to challenge. As the sleaze escalates and the challenge begins to look like a threat, how far will the powers-that-be go to protect their interests…?

About the Author

An Occupational Hazard is James Wrethman’s first novel.  Starting as a casino croupier in Glasgow he had graduated to management by the early 1970’s and held senior positions with three of the leading British gaming companies of that period. A number of years were then spent setting up casinos on cruise ships calling at ports in Australia and the Far East.

James later opened and operated casinos in Spain, Nigeria and Yugoslavia, his period in the latter terminated by the outbreak of war. Next came Poland and Slovakia during their transition to democracy followed by a spell in Peru. He moved to Russia in the early 90’s just in time to be in close attendance during Yelsin’s assault on the White House (The Duma).

All those experiences, he feels, will give him ample material for writing his novels. He has regularly written articles for Press and Gaming publications some of which can be found on this website –

Amazon reviews of this book:

5.0 out of 5 stars  Great read

By Mr. Michael S. Bird on 22 Jun. 2009

The author has, for many years, commented on the gambling scene, often with wit and humour. His first book meets the challenge of providing a great thriller story with twisting plots as well as sex, drugs, gambling and everything you would expect from the gambling world.

James Wrethman works in the casino industry so insiders should look to see if their persona is included.

4.0 out of 5 stars  Casino Heyday

Arh the 1970’s, so often in the shadow of the 60’s, yet so much better. An Occupational Hazard is set in the London casino world of the 1970s and purports to mix fact and fiction. It’s up to the reader to determine for themselves the likely factual elements but it’s not unreasonable to assume that most of it is fact.

The story centres on the Ventura Casino beginning in 1974. The name seems a bit odd but, that aside, it’s there to draw the reader knowingly into a world that really existed but without giving the name of the casino, or casinos, on which this is based.

This is an intriguing story that hinges on the fate of staff at the Ventura Casino, the corruption and the wide spread avoidance of the law that existed in the casino business in the 1970s. The main character experiences the extremes that naivety leads her into trouble and the story is resolved in the present with more unwinding of the tale. It paints a sordid picture where lasciviousness and money meet institutional deviance. Oh what a lovely place the casino world used to be.

The defining essence of the piece is its straightforwardness in that you feel empathy with the main characters and dislike for the obvious villains.

This work is from a first time author and the prose reads easily and the story line is well constructed. It’s a bit too long and James Wrethman has shied away from comparison with the boring casinos we have today where few things of note happen. However, it is an enjoyable read and if you spend much time in casinos this will give you some indication of a different life in very recent history.
